What is EAS System?
EAS(Electronic Article Surveillance) is a technological method for preventing shoplifting. The first EAS system that was based on RF(Radio Frequency)technology was invented by Arthur Minasy in 1966. Until today, EAS is still the most popular and effective retail security system.
How does EAS work?
EAS security system usually consists of three components:
- The Detection system(Security gate)
- Label and Tag
- Deactivator or Detacher
At the exit of the store, the security gate can detect any passing active tags and issue an alert. Usually, there is a transmitter and receiver working together.
The tags play a very important role in the entire EAS security system. Security labels or tags are attached to every item that needs to be protected. The tag will trigger an antenna alarm when it passes through the antenna detection area.
Detacher is a tool for staff to remove those reusable hard tags. Deactivator is used to deactivate soft labels. The type of the detacher depends on the type of tag.
Types of EAS system
RF system (frequency: 8.2MHz)
The RF transmitter continuously emits a signal with a frequency of 7.5~8.5 MHz. When an active tag is close to the transmitter, a resonant signal is generated here. The tag reflects this signal to the receiver. The receiver will issue an alarm after processing this signal.

AM system (frequency: 58KHz)
AM transmitter emits electromagnetic waves at a frequency of 58 kHz. When a tag with a frequency of 58KHz enters the antenna detection area, cross resonance occurs. Then the tag will gain energy from the antenna. And the energy accumulated will be reflected receiver after four consecutive times. After AM receiver processes, it will generate a current signal and then issue an alarm.
The AM system has more stable performance and more aesthetics. As a result, about 35% of retailers around the world choose AM systems.
EM system (frequency: 1~2MHz)
The EM transmitter and receiver form a closed loop magnetic field. When the EM tag enters the detection area, it will magnetize and generate a weak current signal. After EM receiver processes the signal, it will generate a DC drive horn alarm.
The EM tag has the right size and low price. So EM system is still very popular in the library, bookstore, etc.
